Bearing Assembly

The Cougar Tool oil-sealed bearing assembly carries all the radial and thrust loads. To extend bearing life, Cougar utilizes a high pressure rotary shaft seal design, specifically designed for drilling motor use. Abrasive drilling fluids never contact the seal and maintain good oil lubrication on the bearings.

The Cougar drilling motor reduces the bearing load by using more radial support for side loading in directional applications and high capacity thrust bearings for on- and off-bottom loading.

The Cougar Tool sealing system includes a unique flow restrictor design which delivers maximum flow to the bit for exceptional hydraulic horsepower and excellent hole cleaning. This flow restrictor equalizes the pressure from the inside of the motor to the hydrostatic pressure in the well bore, reducing the apparent pressure experienced by the motor seals.

The Cougar Tool drilling motor has a large bit mandrel to provide a more accurate and durable drive system. Its designed with a large bore, which is maintained throughout the motor, to minimize pressure drop across the motor and maximize available hydraulic power. All parts of the bearing assembly have been designed to eliminate fatigue by including large radii stress relief.  Of course its manufactured from tough, high strength alloy steels. Cougar’s bearing assembly is designed to run not only with low torque / high speed power sections but with the latest high torque output power sections available on the market today.

Adjustable Housing

The Cougar adjustable housing has been improved.  Most drilling motors have only 12 to 13 settings. The Cougar adjustable housing has 15 settings, allowing a fine adjustment of tool angle and thus more refined build rates. Cougar Tool’s adjustable housing is field-settable so adjustments can be made right at the rig.

Dump Sub Bored for a Float

The Cougar Float Dump Sub is a by-pass valve which allows drilling fluid to fill the drill string when tripping into the hole and drain the string while tripping out of the hole. This prevents a wet trip.

On all Cougar motors the ported plugs can be changed out easily at the drilling rig with solid plugs, converting the Float Dump Sub back to a regular Float Sub.

Drive Shaft Assembly

The robust drive shaft on the Cougar drilling motor can easily handle the rotational movement of the rotor along with the bend of the adjustable housing, in addition to torques well in excess of the stall torque of the power section.

The superior universal joints combined with the massive drive shaft ensures the heavy duty drive assembly will handle the loads and torques created by the most powerful extended power sections on the market today.

Stabilization

A stabilizer can be installed not only over the bearing housing, but can be strategically placed along the complete drilling motor to provide added stability for a packed or pendulum drilling assembly. This unique feature minimizes deviation problems and holds the well bore vertical.

Rotor Catches image

All Cougar drilling motors come equipped with a rotor catch, to make certain that every Cougar drilling motor can be retrieved in its entirety if a problem occurs downhole. The Cougar rotor catch is a superior design to ensure 100% recoverability.

Coil Tubing

Cougar Tool has a long and successful history of running motors in coil tubing applications.  Cougar’s drilling motors are built and designed to accommodate the drilling parameters of any coil tubing rig and provide maximum performance in the drilling industry today. All Cougar coil motors are equipped with rotor catches to ensure complete retrievability, if problems occur during drilling.
